Something (Someone) Borrowed

Have you ever thought that, maybe now, someone's borrowing someone of yours?

only you don't know that you own that someone.
or maybe you do, but you own him mentally.
while someone else owes him in reality.

have you?

"Things we lose have a way of coming back to us in the end" - Luna Lovegood

kalau jodoh tak ke mana~ whatever will be, will be~ good things come to those who wait~ agreed. but to wait for 6 years for something that could have happened then is not as good as it sounds, yes?

well, i'm not talking bout me if you're wondering (as far as i'm concerned...). i'm talking bout the movie Something Borrowed.

the tagline itself catches your attention doesn't it? yes, that thin, thin line. oh how it causes so many confusing confessions in diaries and "it's complicated" relationship status on fb.

Rachel: I first met Dex 6 years ago, at NYU. He was handsome… and charming… He was just…perfect… Then he met my best friend, Darcy.

something like this will happen to me, likely. since i'm the ugly fried lololol i'm okay with it :')

i just watched it yesterday. but before that i've watched it before, quite some time ago. when i watched it then, that movie slapped me on the face at some parts. some scenes were just... relatable. like some songs were. so naturally, i cried. but not tears-streaming-down-your-face-Coldplay's lyric crying, just misty eyes like Owl City's. k wutt. the point is i shed a tear at the love and friendship.

everybody knows i'm a true believer in friends-turn-lovers, oops, married couple. to me if you wanna be out of the friendzone, you've gotta be in the friendzone first. get it?

like Dex and Rachel. both were friends, and their feelings grew. awww sho tiut! but Darcy came and poisoned their tree of love... well she did try kenenkan her bff Rachel with Dex, but after both of them were too shy to confess their luffa each other, Rachel made her move. sape suruh malu-malu, plislah weh plislah. for God's sake, Dex, you're the man here. how could you expect Rachel to say it first? grow some ballsss.

ok fine you went after her when she left the bar. but how could you ask her if she's ok with you being with Darcy? that's terrible. she must be expecting you to beg her to stay or whatever but instead, you ask for her freaking permission to be with her freaking bff? somebody slap him pleaseee.

you thought she'd say "it's not okay for you to spend the night with a girl you just met rather than me who's been besides you this whole time! i like you! i maybe even love you!" and you'd reply "i love you too!" and you'll get that happy ending just like that? pfft. of course she'd say it's okay. she's a girl, who thought she's plain-looking and didn't stand a chance with you. while you're a hunk whose handsomeness faded away when you became a coward. shame on you dude, shame on you.

"Cause I never thought someone like you can love someone like me"

because of you, it took you two 6 freaking years to end up together, something which could have happened in one night. do you think it's easy for Rachel to see her best friend dating you? being engaged to the man she loved? it must be killing her. the love of her life! the best friend forever!

oh speaking of best friends forever, the friendship in this movie really touches me. when Darcy said things to Rachel about their friendship, i just wanna cry and call my friends. but i didn't do the latter cos i don't do the calling, people, na-aa *bitchslap*

"You are my bestfriend is the understatement of the century.
You're the sister I never had.
You're sometimes the mother I often need."

i think i have found a Darcy(s) to my Rachel ;)

but i don't know if i've found my Ethan. i think i have, and i wish he is. but it's too early to tell. even friends fall apart, since before this i thought i've found Ethan for a couple of times.... but it turned out they were just some temporary bros. plus i don't really have guy friends, lol so it's a slim chance.

Ethan is Rachel and Darcy's friend since forever too, but he's closer to Rachel, they're like the best friends guys and girls should be while Ethan and Darcy have like a love-hate friendship.

i love Ethan from the very start. because he's always there for her, he listened to her pointless dramas all the time and he knocked some sense into her. sometimes he can be harsh, but his heart's in a good place. he encouraged Rachel to do something good for herself, he pushed her whenever she's at dead end. he's a good friend. i wish Ethan was my best guy friend.

Ethan: Rachel. Okay, look, I get it. You’re in a tough spot because you love him. But you gotta do something about it Rachel. He’s a coward. If he breaks your heart, I’m gonna take a swing at him. – Then I’m partly gonna let him beat me up.
Rachel: I gotta go. I’m late.
Ethan: I know! Rachel, that’s the point. Be late. Better yet, quit. At least it would be a decision. Rachel! You’re all going to hell anyway, so you might as well do something for yourself. For once. Rachel, you deserve to be happy.

i want a friend like this.

yes, even this.

Ethan was perfect as a guy best friend.... until he confessed his love for Rachel.

i

was

in

RAGE.

WHY DID YOU HAVE TO DO THAT?!! ME, A DEVOTED SHIPPER OF RON/HERMIONE, ROBIN/BARNEY WHOSE RELATIONSHIPS WERE BASED ON FRIENDSHIPS, ME, OF ALL PEOPLE, CAN'T STAND IT IF ETHAN WANNA HAVE THE SAME THING TOO. CAN GUYS AND GIRLS NOT BE FRIENDS AT ALL WITHOUT FALLING FOR EACH OTHER? CAN'T A GUY ALWAYS BE THERE FOR A GIRL AS A FRIEND WITHOUT ENDING UP TO BE HER BOYFRIEND? I'VE HAD ENOUGH.

i just want to see another friendship like Harry and Hermione's. i just want to see another proof, even in fiction, that it is possible for two people of opposite gender to stay just friends forever, nothing more and nothing less. in another world i might have been rooting for Ethan and Rachel to walk down the aisle together but this time, NO.

it happened when Rachel said a line i so understand more than some people can.

someone's first choice. first

not someone's first choice and then second, or someone's sometimes first choice. you may say so, but to me to be a choice is not better than none. don't be so desperate and say "well, at least a guy wants me, even if he wants a parade of other girls." don't settle for less than you deserve just because you can't wait for it. if a guy has to even choose, he's not good enough for anyone if he can't even make up his own mind.

back on track. Rachel said that line, and guess what did Ethan reply?

DUDEEEE.

this is his whole speech:

"Maybe you’re someone’s first choice. What? You never wondered about me? I don’t know how to say this… Um, gosh, Rachel, I like you. I’ve always liked you. And when another guy came in the picture, I liked you even more. You are home for me. Wow! That sounded crazy. Wow. And that’s probably what all this is. I mean, it’s probably crazy. It’s not love. But… it kind of feels like it is. Don’t worry. My love is not really the overwhelming kind. Geez, when I’m in love, I drink Rose and watch “Remains of the Day,” so… I don’t know, Rachel, maybe it’s just that I miss you. But I think you fell in love with someone else. And I think you still are."

yes, that's reasonable. Ethan just moved to London, he missed his best friend. so like some annoyingly confused and sometimes desperate guys, he misunderstood the loneliness as love. tsk, tsk Ethan, tsk tsk. you could not be in love with Rachel, you've been there pushing her to be with Dex all the time. no, don't use "i'm happy as long as someone i love happy even if it means it hurts me" reason. oh for the record, i think that's a piece of crap.

or maybe i just don't understand love. well if its many definitions on tumblr are valid, love is not as grand as it should be.

i know, it doesn't make sense. Ethan and Rachel were best friends forever and shared everything together, so naturally i would have given this ship all the approvals in the world. but this time, no.

that's the only screwed up scene in this movie to me.

i love this movie. one of my favourite romantic, bittersweet comedies. i laughed. i cried. i smiled.

most of all, i love the story of the thin line.
